Grid upgrades, not chargers, now the bottleneck for five-minute charging

Cenex has been looking at charging infrastructure for the marine sector, not depots or forecourts, and the findings are still worth a read for anyone running a road fleet. Five-minute flash charging is emerging as a serious prospect for boats as electrification spreads beyond cars and vans, but the grid infrastructure to deliver that power at the quayside mostly does not exist yet, according to Cenex.
The gap is not really about the chargers themselves. It is the wires and substations behind them. Delivering flash-charging speeds at scale means significant upgrades to grid capacity and local infrastructure, and that work does not happen on the same timeline as vessel or vehicle rollout. Cenex's point about marine charging is really a point about the grid generally: demand is outpacing the network's ability to keep up, not the other way round.
Why this matters: The read-across to road fleets is the grid, not the boats. Anyone building a business case around ultra-fast charging on land should still treat grid connection timelines as the binding constraint, not vehicle range or charger spec. Build that lag into procurement and site-investment planning now, rather than assuming the infrastructure will simply arrive alongside the hardware.
