THRIVE verdict
Carries more than almost any small van, electric or not, but charging and range sit at the back of the class.
The headline numbers here are payload and volume: 1,045kg and 4.8m³ are the highest of all 49 and 48 small vans THRIVE tracks respectively, well above the medians of 739kg and 3.7m³. For operators who need to carry bulky or heavy loads in a small van footprint, that's a genuine practical advantage few rivals can match.
Set against that, range and charging lag the electric small van field. 141 miles sits in the lowest quarter of 18 electric small vans (median 184 miles, best 374 miles), and 57kW peak DC charging is also lowest-quarter (median 100kW), with a 5-80% top-up taking 45 minutes. This suits local, predictable routes rather than multi-drop days needing frequent rapid charging.
Against named rivals, the Kia PV5 Cargo Essential offers more range (179 miles) but much less payload (800kg) and volume (4m³); the Nissan Townstar EV tows more (1,500kg) but again carries less (713kg). The Toyota Proace City diesel carries 936kg and tows 1,000kg, a useful diesel comparison for those not tied to electric power. Towing on the eDeliver 3 itself, at 1,030kg, is only around the class median.
Best for
- Heavy or bulky payloads in a compact van
- Maximum load volume without stepping up a size class
- Local or urban routes with predictable, shorter distances
Think twice
- Range is in the lowest quarter for electric small vans
- DC charging speed also trails the class
- Towing capacity is only around the median, not a strength
Written 8 October 2026 from the verified figures on this page and the rest of the THRIVE database, and checked figure by figure before publishing. How we check
What fits in the load area
| Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm) | 2, in a single row |
|---|---|
| UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm) | 2, in a single row |
| 8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm) | Too long for the floor |
| Pipe, timber or ladders | Up to 2.1m on the floor |
Worked out from the verified floor length 2,180mm, 1,220mm between the wheel arches, 1,330mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 520kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,180mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.
Electric or diesel?
How the Maxus eDeliver 3 L1 H1 Van (50kWh) compares with Toyota Proace City Icon Ply Lining, Medium Panel Van, 1.5 Diesel (100hp) Manual, the closest alternative across the electric line, for a typical working day.
A diesel suits this mileage better
- Range. 100 miles a day is beyond a planning range of about 99 miles: the van would need around 1 miles of charging mid-shift.
- Payload. The electric version carries 109kg more (1,045kg against 936kg).
- Towing. Braked towing: 1,030kg electric, 1,000kg diesel.
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 10p a mile against 14.7p for diesel: roughly £1,175 a year less at 25,000 miles.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Daily mileage above about 99 miles needs a mid-shift charge every day.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 141-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.35 kWh a mile: THRIVE's typical figure for an electric van (this van's usable battery is not verified).
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Toyota Proace City Icon Ply Lining, Medium Panel Van, 1.5 Diesel (100hp) Manual's official 51.3mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
