Geotab has announced a new telematics partnership with Openreach, FleetPoint reports, with an early adopters phase now under way in which volunteer engineers are testing the technology and validating the user experience ahead of any wider rollout.

If the trial proves successful, Openreach will deploy the technology across its entire fleet of more than 23,000 company cars and commercial vans. Openreach operates the UK's second largest commercial fleet, with engineers driving millions of miles a year to build and maintain the country's digital network.

The data is intended to identify potential vehicle maintenance issues before they cause breakdowns, and to help Openreach understand fuel consumption and vehicle utilisation to inform its transition to lower-emission vehicles. Geotab shares driving data directly with drivers through an app, allowing engineers to view and self-correct their own driving behaviour.

The technology includes controls that limit data collection outside working hours, and Openreach has worked with recognised trade unions CWU and Prospect on the trial.

Judy O'Keefe, Director of Fleet Management at Openreach, said: "We have worked with the CWU and Prospect, our recognised Trade Unions on this trial which will help us better understand how our fleet is performing so we can improve safety, reduce downtime and provide our colleagues with the best possible support."

Aaron Jarvis, Vice President EMEA at Geotab, said: "We have collaborated closely to ensure our solution was rigorously validated by both leadership and the engineers who depend on driving for their daily roles."
