Electric HGVs and zero-emission trucks

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard is designed to deliver up to 3.75 megawatts, against 350kW from a typical CCS truck charger. MAN began series production of MCS-ready eTrucks on 31 July 2026, with Great Britain among the first delivery markets; MAN says the trucks can draw up to 750kW, charging 20-80% in under 30 minutes. Russell Group said a MAN eTGX charged from 20% to 90% in 30 minutes at its Coatbridge depot on 8 September 2026, the first UK demonstration of megawatt charging on a truck.

Public charging is still limited. Gridserve plans to reach 11 publicly accessible eHGV hubs by early 2027 through its Electric Freightway network, developed under the Department for Transport-funded Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator programme. Depot charging now carries government funding: the Depot Charging Scheme covers 70% of charge point and civil costs, up to £1 million per organisation. The Zero Emission Truck Grant discounts a new electric HGV by up to £81,000, or 40% of the purchase price, whichever is lower, for the heaviest vehicles.

Depot-based operators are already running electric HGVs day to day: Grundon Waste Management's DAF XD FAN electric rigids cover more than 200 miles on a full charge collecting waste from its Colnbrook depot. Octopus Energy and CATL plan a longer-term alternative for longer routes: battery-swapping hubs that replace a depleted pack in minutes, due to open in the UK from 2027, with around 30 sites planned by 2035.
