THRIVE verdict

A crew van that trades load space for people-carrying, with strong payload and towing for its price

This is the FlexCab version of the Transit Connect, meaning it's built to carry a crew as well as cargo, and that shows in the numbers. At 2.5m³ it sits in the lowest quarter of small vans for load volume, so if raw carrying space is the priority, this isn't it. But payload of 782kg is above the median for the class, and braked towing of 1,400kg is also above median, so it can still shift decent weight and pull a trailer.

Against named rivals, the Volkswagen Caddy Cargo C20 offers more volume (3.1m³) and similar payload (733kg) for a touch less money, while the Renault Kangoo ML19 undercuts this van on price (£22,300) with more volume (3.3m³) and a higher payload (836kg). The Transit Connect's list price of £27,600 is below the class median, which helps offset its space disadvantage, but buyers prioritising cubic capacity should look hard at those two before committing.

Fuel economy of 50.5mpg is above the median for diesel small vans, useful for high-mileage crews. Ford also offers this same FlexCab body as a plug-in hybrid with more power and higher mpg, but at a higher price and notably lower payload (606kg), so the diesel remains the better fit where carrying capacity matters more than running on electric power alone.

Best for

  • mobile teams needing seats and cargo in one vehicle
  • operators needing above-average payload in a small van
  • businesses that tow trailers regularly

Think twice

  • load volume is in the bottom quarter for the class
  • Caddy and Kangoo both offer more space for similar or less money

Could you go electric?

How this van compares with Ford E-Transit Courier Van Trend 46kWh Electric Drive 136PS 1-speed auto, the closest alternative across the electric line, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Electric could work: check the points below

  • Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 141 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 86kg less (696kg against 782kg).
  • Towing. Braked towing: 750kg electric, 1,400kg diesel.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 6.5p a mile against 14.9p for diesel: roughly £2,100 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for no more than the diesel after the £2,500 zero emission van and truck grant.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Towing more than 750kg.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 201-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.229 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Ford Transit Connect FlexCab Trend SWB (L1) 2.0L EcoBlue 102PS 6-speed manual's official 50.5mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
