THRIVE verdict

A discontinued small electric van with modest range, weak payload and a premium price versus rivals.

The eCitan is now discontinued, so this is really a used or residual-stock proposition. At £32,700 before any grant, it sits in the highest quarter of small vans on price, and even with the Zero Emission Van Grant it lists £8,625 more than the equivalent diesel Citan. Running costs favour it when charged at depot or home, but that saving has to work hard against the upfront gap.

Payload is 448kg, in the lowest quarter of small vans against a median of 739kg, and load volume of 2.9m³ is also lowest-quarter against a median of 3.7m³. The load bay takes two Euro pallets or one UK pallet in a single row, and pipe or timber up to 1.8m, so it still handles typical trade loads, just with less spare capacity than most rivals. Range of 176 miles is lowest-quarter for electric small vans too.

Against the Renault Kangoo Van E-Tech, which costs less and carries more payload, and the Nissan Townstar EV with a larger load volume, the eCitan's combination of higher price, lower payload and modest charging speed (75kW, lowest quarter for electric small vans) is hard to justify unless a specific deal or existing fleet commonality makes the numbers work.

Best for

  • short urban rounds within 176-mile range
  • light loads needing one or two pallets
  • fleets charging mainly at depot or home

Think twice

  • discontinued model, check residual support
  • payload and load volume both lowest-quarter for the class
  • £8,625 price premium over the diesel equivalent after grant

What fits in the load area

Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm)2, in a single row
UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm)1, in a single row
8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm)Too long for the floor
Pipe, timber or laddersUp to 1.8m on the floor

Worked out from the verified floor length 1,806mm, 1,260mm between the wheel arches, 1,256mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 220kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,106mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.

Electric or diesel?

How the Mercedes-Benz eCitan Panel Van L1 BASE, 90kW motor, 45kWh battery compares with Mercedes-Benz Citan 110 Panel Van L1 BASE, 1,461cc diesel 95PS 6-speed manual, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Workable, with planning

  • Range. 100 miles a day is close to a planning range of about 123 miles: workable, but cold or heavily loaded days may need a top-up.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 232kg less (448kg against 680kg).
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 10p a mile against 13.9p for diesel: roughly £975 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for £8,625 more after the £2,500 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 8.8 years.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Loads that use the last 232kg of the diesel's payload.
  • A short holding period: the electric price premium takes longer than six years to recover at this mileage.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 176-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.35 kWh a mile: THRIVE's typical figure for an electric van (this van's usable battery is not verified).
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Mercedes-Benz Citan 110 Panel Van L1 BASE, 1,461cc diesel 95PS 6-speed manual's official 54.3mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
