THRIVE verdict
A short-range small electric van with below-average payload and volume, priced at a premium over diesel.
The eCitan L2 is built for local, predictable routes rather than long days on the road. Its WLTP range of 167 miles sits in the lowest quarter of electric small vans we track, and DC rapid charging tops out at 75kW, also in the lowest quarter, so a 10-80% top-up takes 38 minutes. Fine for depot-based work, less so for multi-drop driving far from base.
Payload is 616kg, in the lowest quarter of small vans in our database against a median of 739kg, and load volume of 3.62m³ sits below the class median too. It still takes two Euro or UK standard pallets in a single row, and will carry pipe, timber or ladders up to 2.1m, but an 8x4 sheet is too long for the floor.
At £33,890 before the plug-in van grant, this is priced in the highest quarter of small vans we track. After the Zero Emission Van Grant it still lists £8,470 above the equivalent diesel Citan, which also carries more (854kg) and matches it on volume. Against the Renault Kangoo E-Tech (£26,850, 608kg, 184 miles) and Citroën ë-Berlingo (£29,905, 691kg, 3.9m³), the eCitan looks expensive for what it offers on range and payload.
Best for
- depot-based or local delivery rounds
- operators able to charge overnight rather than rely on public rapid charging
- loads needing two pallets or long items up to 2.1m
Think twice
- payload is in the lowest quarter of its class
- range and charging speed both trail most electric rivals
- list price sits well above the diesel Citan even after the grant

What fits in the load area
| Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm) | 2, in a single row |
|---|---|
| UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm) | 2, in a single row |
| 8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm) | Too long for the floor |
| Pipe, timber or ladders | Up to 2.1m on the floor |
Worked out from the verified floor length 2,170mm, 1,260mm between the wheel arches, 1,256mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 300kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,106mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.
Electric or diesel?
How the Mercedes-Benz eCitan Panel Van L2 BASE, 90kW motor, 45kWh battery compares with Mercedes-Benz Citan 110 Panel Van L2 BASE, 1,461cc diesel 95PS 6-speed manual, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.
Workable, with planning
- Range. 100 miles a day is close to a planning range of about 117 miles: workable, but cold or heavily loaded days may need a top-up.
- Payload. The electric version carries 238kg less (616kg against 854kg).
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 10p a mile against 14.9p for diesel: roughly £1,225 a year less at 25,000 miles.
- Price. The electric version lists for £8,470 more after the £2,500 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 6.9 years.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Loads that use the last 238kg of the diesel's payload.
- A short holding period: the electric price premium takes longer than six years to recover at this mileage.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 167-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.35 kWh a mile: THRIVE's typical figure for an electric van (this van's usable battery is not verified).
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Mercedes-Benz Citan 110 Panel Van L2 BASE, 1,461cc diesel 95PS 6-speed manual's official 50.4mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
