THRIVE verdict

A genuinely spacious large van let down by one of the weaker payloads in its class.

The Sprinter 315 L4 H2 PRO is built for volume. Its 15.5m³ load area sits in the highest quarter of large vans, and the floor will take six Euro pallets or four UK pallets in a single row, plus 8x4 sheets flat between the arches and pipework up to 4.8m long. That makes it a strong choice for bulky, low-density loads rather than heavy ones.

Payload is the trade-off: 965kg puts it in the lowest quarter of large vans, well below the class median of 1,260kg. The Volkswagen Crafter Commerce Plus (988kg, 16.4m³) and MAN TGE (1,098kg, 16.42m³) both carry more, while the Renault Master E-Tech (939kg, 14.8m³) carries less. Anyone running close to payload limits should check actual kerb weight with options fitted.

At £51,820 ex VAT it's in the top quarter on price too, more expensive than the Crafter and well above the Master E-Tech, though it returns 32.1mpg, above the median for diesel large vans. The 3-year unlimited mileage warranty with Mercedes-trained technicians is a useful backstop for fleets running vans hard.

Best for

  • Bulky, light loads needing maximum cubic capacity
  • Pallet and sheet-material distribution
  • Operators wanting strong warranty backup

Think twice

  • Payload is among the lowest in the large van class
  • Price sits in the upper quarter versus rivals

What fits in the load area

Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm)6, in a single row
UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm)4, in a single row
8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm)Lie flat on the floor, between the wheel arches
Pipe, timber or laddersUp to 4.8m on the floor

Worked out from the verified floor length 4,810mm, 1,350mm between the wheel arches, 2,009mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 160kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,859mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.

Could you go electric?

How this van compares with Renault Master E-Tech LH35 Panel Van E-Tech Advance MY26, the closest alternative across the electric line, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Electric looks practical

  • Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 169 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 26kg less (939kg against 965kg).
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 10.3p a mile against 23.4p for diesel: roughly £3,275 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for no more than the diesel after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 242-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.36 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 315 Van L4 H2 PRO RWD's official 32.1mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
