THRIVE verdict

Strong load volume and fast charging, but payload and range trail the large electric van class.

The eSprinter 314 L3 PRO offers 14m³ of load space, above the median for large vans, making it a genuinely practical size for bulky loads. But its 502kg payload sits in the lowest quarter of the class, well below the 1,260kg median, so this is a van for volume work rather than heavy cargo.

At £58,850 before VAT it's in the top quarter of large van prices, though the plug-in van grant helps offset that. Range of 161 miles is in the bottom quarter for electric large vans, against a class median of 235 miles, so route planning matters. DC charging tops out at 115kW, below the class median of 130kW, though a 10-80% charge in 34 minutes still allows reasonable turnaround on longer shifts.

Against rivals, the Citroën ë-Relay and Ford E-Transit both carry more payload and cost less, with the ë-Relay also managing 235 miles of range. The Volkswagen Crafter, a diesel, offers similar load volume without the range question but suits different duty cycles. The eSprinter's case rests on its cabin space and charging speed, not outright payload or price.

Best for

  • Bulky, lightweight loads needing maximum cube
  • Urban and regional delivery rounds within a predictable daily radius
  • Operators valuing quick top-up charging over long range

Think twice

  • Payload is in the lowest quarter of the class
  • Range is below most electric large van rivals
  • Price sits in the top quarter even after the grant

What fits in the load area

Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm)5, in a single row
UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm)4, in a single row
8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm)Lie flat on the floor, between the wheel arches
Pipe, timber or laddersUp to 4.4m on the floor

Worked out from the verified floor length 4,410mm, 1,350mm between the wheel arches, 2,009mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 100kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,859mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.

Electric or diesel?

How the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter 81kWh eSprinter 314 Van L3 PRO compares with Renault Master LH35 Blue dCi 130 Panel Advance MY24, the closest alternative across the electric line, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Workable, with planning

  • Range. 100 miles a day is close to a planning range of about 113 miles: workable, but cold or heavily loaded days may need a top-up.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 10p a mile against 20.5p for diesel: roughly £2,625 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for £17,800 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 6.8 years.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • A short holding period: the electric price premium takes longer than six years to recover at this mileage.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 161-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.35 kWh a mile: THRIVE's typical figure for an electric van (this van's usable battery is not verified).
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Renault Master LH35 Blue dCi 130 Panel Advance MY24's official 36.7mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
