THRIVE verdict

A keenly priced, high-volume large van with strong economy for a diesel and solid towing, but payload isn't confirmed.

The Master LM35 Blue dCi 130 sits in the lowest price quarter of large vans on THRIVE, at £35,050 ex VAT, yet still delivers 13m³ of load space, which is above the class median. For fleets watching capital cost without wanting to shrink the load bay, that combination is hard to ignore.

Load dimensions are practical: four Euro pallets or three UK pallets fit in a single row, 8x4 sheets lie flat between the arches, and pipework or ladders up to 3.8m can go on the floor. Braked towing of 2,500kg is above the class median too, useful for trades hauling a trailer alongside the van load.

Against the Nissan Interstar Panel Van (£35,890, 37.2mpg) and Ford Transit Van Leader (£49,845, 31.7mpg), the Master undercuts both on price while posting 37.7mpg, in the top 10% of diesel large vans on THRIVE. The electric Master E-Tech costs £3,200 more after grant with 252 miles range; which suits better depends on mileage and charging access.

Best for

  • Volume-focused trades needing a large load bay on a tight budget
  • Operators towing trailers alongside a full load
  • Sheet material and pallet haulage

Think twice

  • Payload figure not yet verified in THRIVE data, confirm before specifying
  • Electric Master E-Tech costs more up front after grant, weigh against diesel running pattern

Worked out from the verified floor length 3,857mm, 1,380mm between the wheel arches, 1,885mm high. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,735mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.

Could you go electric?

How this van compares with Renault Master E-Tech LM35 Panel Van E-Tech Advance MY24, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Electric could work: check the points below

  • Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 176 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
  • Towing. Braked towing: 2,300kg electric, 2,500kg diesel.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 9.9p a mile against 20p for diesel: roughly £2,525 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for £3,200 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 1.3 years.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Towing more than 2,300kg.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 252-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.345 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Renault Master LM35 Blue dCi 130 Panel Advance MY26's official 37.7mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
