Compare the Ford Transit with

THRIVE verdict

A high-payload, strong-towing large Transit diesel, but priced above most large van rivals.

This Transit carries 1,380kg, above the median for large vans, and tows up to 2,800kg, in the top quarter of the class. That combination suits operators hauling heavy loads or pulling trailers regularly, such as tradespeople with plant or those needing a braked trailer on top of a full payload.

At £49,845 it sits above the median large van price, and well above the Citroën Relay (£34,855) and Toyota Proace Max (£35,670), both of which offer similar or better payload and identical 13m³ load volume. Those alternatives are worth checking if towing capacity isn't a priority, since the Transit's price premium buys mainly the towing and payload edge.

Fuel economy of 31.7mpg is better than most diesel large vans. Against the E-Transit version, the electric lists £3,500 less after grant but carries far less payload (865kg) and much smaller volume (12.4m³), so the diesel remains the choice where load-carrying matters more than running costs or range.

Best for

  • Heavy-payload work needing up to 1,380kg
  • Trailer towing up to 2,800kg
  • Bulky loads: 8x4 sheets lie flat, up to 4 Euro pallets

Think twice

  • List price above median; cheaper diesel rivals offer similar payload
  • Electric E-Transit version costs less after grant but with far lower payload and volume

What fits in the load area

Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm)4, in a single row
UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm)3, in a single row
8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm)Lie flat on the floor, between the wheel arches
Pipe, timber or laddersUp to 3.5m on the floor

Worked out from the verified floor length 3,533mm, 1,392mm between the wheel arches, 2,125mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 340kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,975mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.

Could you go electric?

How this van compares with Ford E-Transit Van Leader 350L L3 H3 Standard Range 68kWh 135kW/184PS, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Workable, with planning

  • Range. 100 miles a day is close to a planning range of about 106 miles: workable, but cold or heavily loaded days may need a top-up.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 515kg less (865kg against 1,380kg).
  • Towing. Braked towing: 750kg electric, 2,800kg diesel.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 12.8p a mile against 23.7p for diesel: roughly £2,725 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for no more than the diesel after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Loads that use the last 515kg of the diesel's payload.
  • Towing more than 750kg.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 152-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.447 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Ford Transit Van Leader 350L L3 H3 2.0L EcoBlue 130PS 6-speed manual FWD's official 31.7mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
