THRIVE verdict
Strong payload and towing for a large diesel Transit, at a premium price and with below-average load volume.
This Transit carries 1,479kg, among the highest payloads of any large van we track, and tows up to 2,800kg, also in the top quarter for the class. That combination suits operators who load heavy rather than bulky: builders' merchants, plant and tool hire, or anyone regularly hitching a trailer. Fuel economy of 33.6mpg is also in the top quarter for diesel large vans of this size.
Set against the Nissan Interstar and Citroën Relay, both cheaper at £34,990 and £34,045, the Transit's payload still comes out ahead of either (1,366kg and 1,425kg), and its fuel economy beats the Relay's 30.4mpg too, but buyers must weigh that against paying £48,045 against those lower prices. Load volume at 10m³ is in the lowest quarter for the class, behind the Relay's 11.5m³ and Interstar's 10.8m³, so this is a van built more for weight than cubic capacity.
The E-Transit twin shares the body but drops payload to 894kg and volume to 9.5m³, with 159 miles of official range; after the Zero Emission Van Grant it lists £3,500 less than this diesel. Running costs depend on where it charges, cheaper per mile on depot or home charging, dearer on public rapid chargers, so the choice comes down to duty cycle and charging access rather than price alone.
Best for
- Heavy-load operators needing high payload
- Businesses that tow regularly up to 2,800kg
- Diesel buyers wanting above-average fuel economy for the class
Think twice
- Load volume is in the lowest quarter for large vans; check it suits bulky loads
- List price is above the class median and higher than the Nissan and Citroën alternatives

What fits in the load area
| Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm) | 3, in a single row |
|---|---|
| UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm) | 3, in a single row |
| 8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm) | Lie flat on the floor, between the wheel arches |
| Pipe, timber or ladders | Up to 3m on the floor |
Worked out from the verified floor length 3,083mm, 1,392mm between the wheel arches, 1,886mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 490kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,736mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.
Could you go electric?
How this van compares with Ford E-Transit Van Leader 350M L2 H2 Standard Range 68kWh 135kW/184PS, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.
Workable, with planning
- Range. 100 miles a day is close to a planning range of about 111 miles: workable, but cold or heavily loaded days may need a top-up.
- Payload. The electric version carries 585kg less (894kg against 1,479kg).
- Towing. Braked towing: 750kg electric, 2,800kg diesel.
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 12.2p a mile against 22.4p for diesel: roughly £2,550 a year less at 25,000 miles.
- Price. The electric version lists for no more than the diesel after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Loads that use the last 585kg of the diesel's payload.
- Towing more than 750kg.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 159-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.428 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Ford Transit Van Leader 350M L2 H2 2.0L EcoBlue 130PS 6-speed manual FWD's official 33.6mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
