THRIVE verdict
Strong payload and towing for a large Transit, but you pay a premium and get less cubic space than rivals.
This Transit's real strengths are what it can carry and pull: a payload of 1,425kg sits in the top quarter of large vans, and braked towing of 2,800kg does too. Fuel economy of 33.2mpg is also above the median for diesel large vans. Load volume at 11.5m³, though, is below the class median, so it's built more for weight and pulling power than outright cubic capacity.
Against named rivals it's a mixed picture. The Citroën Relay Panel Van matches it exactly on payload and load volume but costs £34,045 against this van's £48,845 - a large gap for identical carrying figures, offset only by this Transit's better towing and economy. The Toyota Proace Max goes further: more payload (1,475kg), more volume (12m³) and better economy (36.2mpg), all for less money. On paper those two diesels look the sharper buy unless the Transit's towing matters to the job.
An electric E-Transit in the same body is available too, at £50,345 before the Zero Emission Van Grant, or £3,500 less than this diesel after it - but payload drops to 910kg and volume to 11m³, with 159 miles of official range. Electric running costs are usually lower if charged at depot or home, but worse on public rapid chargers, so the choice comes down to duty cycle and charging access rather than one powertrain being better outright.
Best for
- heavy payload work needing well over a tonne
- towing trailers or plant up to 2,800kg
- pallet and sheet-material loads on the floor
Think twice
- price is above median, and both the Citroën Relay and Toyota Proace Max undercut it with equal or better payload and volume
- load volume of 11.5m³ is below the class median

What fits in the load area
| Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm) | 4, in a single row |
|---|---|
| UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm) | 3, in a single row |
| 8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm) | Lie flat on the floor, between the wheel arches |
| Pipe, timber or ladders | Up to 3.5m on the floor |
Worked out from the verified floor length 3,533mm, 1,392mm between the wheel arches, 1,886mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 350kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,736mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.
Could you go electric?
How this van compares with Ford E-Transit Van Leader 350L L3 H2 Standard Range 68kWh 135kW/184PS, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.
Workable, with planning
- Range. 100 miles a day is close to a planning range of about 111 miles: workable, but cold or heavily loaded days may need a top-up.
- Payload. The electric version carries 515kg less (910kg against 1,425kg).
- Towing. Braked towing: 750kg electric, 2,800kg diesel.
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 12.2p a mile against 22.7p for diesel: roughly £2,625 a year less at 25,000 miles.
- Price. The electric version lists for no more than the diesel after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Loads that use the last 515kg of the diesel's payload.
- Towing more than 750kg.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 159-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.428 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Ford Transit Van Leader 350L L3 H2 2.0L EcoBlue 130PS 6-speed manual FWD's official 33.2mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
