THRIVE verdict
A spacious small electric van let down by below-median payload and range, priced at the top of its class.
The Combo Electric XL earns its keep on load space: 3.9m³ puts it in the top quarter of small vans, useful for bulky but not especially heavy loads. Payload is the catch - 691kg sits below the class median of 739kg, so this suits parcels, tools and light equipment rather than anything approaching the 1,045kg some rivals can carry.
Range of 180 miles is below the median for electric small vans, and towing at 750kg is in the lowest quarter of the class, so this isn't the van for trailer work. On the plus side, the 50.7kWh usable battery is in the top quarter for its class and 100kW DC charging is above median, giving 0-80% in 30 minutes - good for depot-based rounds with return-to-base charging.
At £30,500 before the grant, this is in the top quarter of small vans by price; after the £2,500 plug-in grant it still costs £3,460 more than the equivalent diesel Combo, which carries far more payload at 936kg. Electric running costs beat diesel when charged at depot or home, but not on public rapid chargers, so the right choice depends on mileage and charging access. The identical Fiat E-Doblò and Peugeot E-PARTNER, and the closely matched Citroën ë-Berlingo, are worth cross-shopping at similar or lower prices.
Best for
- Urban and suburban delivery rounds with depot or home charging
- Bulky, lighter loads needing cargo space over payload
- Operators valuing fast rapid-charging turnaround
Think twice
- Payload below class median - check it covers your loads
- Range below median for electric small vans
- Towing capacity in the lowest quarter of the class

What fits in the load area
| Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm) | 2, in a single row |
|---|---|
| UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm) | 2, in a single row |
| 8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm) | Too long for the floor |
| Pipe, timber or ladders | Up to 2.1m on the floor |
Worked out from the verified floor length 2,167mm, 1,229mm between the wheel arches, 1,270mm high. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 340kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count. Goods stacked on a pallet can stand up to about 1,120mm tall, allowing 150mm for the pallet itself.
Electric or diesel?
How the Vauxhall Combo Electric XL Electric 136hp Automatic Prime-Plus compares with Vauxhall Combo XL Diesel 100hp Manual Prime-Plus, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.
Electric could work: check the points below
- Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 126 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
- Payload. The electric version carries 245kg less (691kg against 936kg).
- Towing. Braked towing: 750kg electric, 1,030kg diesel.
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 8.1p a mile against 16.4p for diesel: roughly £2,075 a year less at 25,000 miles.
- Price. The electric version lists for £2,985 more after the £2,500 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 1.4 years.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Loads that use the last 245kg of the diesel's payload.
- Towing more than 750kg.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 180-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.282 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Vauxhall Combo XL Diesel 100hp Manual Prime-Plus's official 46mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
