THRIVE verdict

A well-ranged crew-carrying e-Transporter let down by one of the lighter payloads in its class.

This is the Kombi version of the e-Transporter, built to move people and cargo together on 218 miles of official range, above the median for electric medium vans. Its 70kWh battery and 125kW peak DC charging both sit in the top bracket for this class, so it suits operators doing longer daily rounds who need to top up quickly rather than overnight every time.

Payload is the compromise: 852kg sits in the lowest quarter of medium vans, well below the 1,178kg median and behind its own diesel sibling's 1,131kg. The Citroën ë-Dispatch Crew Van carries more at 1,011kg, though the Ford E-Transit Custom Trend crew version carries less at 870kg. Towing at 2,000kg braked is above the medium van median, useful if trailer work is part of the job.

At £44,490 before the Zero Emission Van Grant, this lists in the top price quarter for medium vans; after the £5,000 grant it comes out only £1,540 more than the diesel Transporter Kombi at £37,950. Energy costs less per mile than diesel when charged at depot or home, more on public rapid chargers, so the right choice depends on duty cycle and charging access rather than list price alone.

Best for

  • crew transport needing longer daily range
  • operations with rapid or fast AC charging access
  • light trailer towing alongside passenger duties

Think twice

  • payload is in the lowest quarter for medium vans
  • list price sits in the top quarter before the grant

Pipe, timber or laddersUp to 2m on the floor

Worked out from the verified floor length 2,032mm, 1,392mm between the wheel arches. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 420kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count.

Electric or diesel?

How the Volkswagen e-Transporter T32 Kombi Commerce Plus LWB 136PS 70 kWh Electric 1-Speed Automatic compares with Volkswagen Transporter T32 Kombi Commerce Plus LWB 150PS 2.0 TDI 6-Speed Manual, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Electric could work: check the points below

  • Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 153 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 279kg less (852kg against 1,131kg).
  • Towing. Braked towing: 2,000kg electric, 2,500kg diesel.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 9.2p a mile against 21p for diesel: roughly £2,950 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for £1,540 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 0.5 years.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Loads that use the last 279kg of the diesel's payload.
  • Towing more than 2,000kg.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 218-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.321 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Volkswagen Transporter T32 Kombi Commerce Plus LWB 150PS 2.0 TDI 6-Speed Manual's official 35.8mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
