THRIVE verdict

A spacious, well-equipped electric medium van with strong charging and range, but a weak payload and premium price.

The e-Transporter pairs a generous load volume of 6.8 m³ with range and charging that sit near the top of its class: 223 miles official range and 125kW peak DC charging both rank in the highest band among electric medium vans. That combination suits multi-drop or longer-day work where fast top-ups matter, and the 11kW AC charging makes depot or overnight charging straightforward.

Payload is the compromise: 1,156kg sits below the class median of 1,178kg, so operators running close to gross weight regularly should check loads carefully. Towing of 2,300kg is above median, useful for occasional trailer work, and the 5-year warranty plus 8-year/100,000-mile battery cover adds reassurance for fleet planning.

At £43,115 before any grant, this sits in the highest price quarter of medium vans, and after the Zero Emission Van Grant it still lists £1,240 more than the equivalent diesel Transporter, which also carries more payload. Against the plug-in hybrid Transporter it's £910 cheaper after grant. The Farizon V7E undercuts it sharply on price and edges it on volume, though with less range. Running costs favour depot or home charging over public rapid charging, so where and how the van charges should weigh into the decision.

Best for

  • multi-drop or longer-day routes needing range and fast charging
  • bulky loads needing above-average volume
  • occasional trailer towing

Think twice

  • payload below class median - check load weights
  • higher list price than diesel and most medium vans

What fits in the load area

Worked out from the verified floor length 3,002mm, 1,392mm between the wheel arches. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 380kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count.

Electric or diesel?

How the Volkswagen e-Transporter T34 Panel Van Commerce Plus LWB 136PS 70 kWh Electric 1-Speed Automatic compares with Volkswagen Transporter T32 Panel Van Commerce LWB 150PS 2.0 TDI 8-Speed Automatic, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Electric could work: check the points below

  • Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 156 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 149kg less (1,156kg against 1,305kg).
  • Towing. Braked towing: 2,300kg electric, 2,800kg diesel.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 9p a mile against 22.4p for diesel: roughly £3,350 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for £1,240 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 0.4 years.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Loads that use the last 149kg of the diesel's payload.
  • Towing more than 2,300kg.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 223-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.314 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Volkswagen Transporter T32 Panel Van Commerce LWB 150PS 2.0 TDI 8-Speed Automatic's official 33.6mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
