THRIVE verdict
A strong, heavy-duty diesel Transporter with the best towing in its class, though thirstier than most diesel rivals.
This Transporter is built for weight and bulk. Payload of 1,305kg sits in the highest quarter of medium vans, load volume of 6.8m³ does too, and its 2,800kg braked towing is the highest figure of 55 medium vans THRIVE tracks. For operators who tow trailers or regularly load heavy, this is a genuine strength over most rivals in the class.
The load bay takes three Euro or UK pallets in a single row, 8x4 sheets flat between the arches, and pipe or timber up to 3m, so it's practical for trades needing full-size sheet materials or long loads, not just parcels. At £36,875 ex VAT it's also below the medium van median price, which helps the business case alongside its load capability.
Against named diesel rivals it's less clear-cut: the Toyota Proace Active Long carries more payload (1,360kg) for a lower price (£32,003), and the Ford Transit Custom Trend also carries slightly more payload (1,308kg) at a broadly similar price. Fuel economy here, at 33.6mpg, is in the lowest quarter of diesel medium vans, trailing both the Ford (38.7mpg) and Toyota (39.2mpg).
Best for
- Towing trailers or heavy equipment
- Bulky loads needing high volume and payload
- Trades carrying full sheet materials or long items
Think twice
- Toyota Proace offers more payload for less money
- Fuel economy trails most diesel rivals in the class
- Ford Transit Custom edges it on payload at a similar price

What fits in the load area
| Euro pallets (1,200 x 800mm) | 3, in a single row |
|---|---|
| UK standard pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm) | 3, in a single row |
| 8 x 4 sheets (2,440 x 1,220mm) | Lie flat on the floor, between the wheel arches |
| Pipe, timber or ladders | Up to 3m on the floor |
Worked out from the verified floor length 3,002mm, 1,392mm between the wheel arches. At the full Euro pallet count, the payload allows about 430kg per pallet. Counts use the width between the wheel arches for the whole floor, so they never over-count. Door openings are not in our data: check the rear and side door apertures before relying on a count.
Could you go electric?
How this van compares with Volkswagen e-Transporter T34 Panel Van Commerce Plus LWB 136PS 70 kWh Electric 1-Speed Automatic, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.
Electric could work: check the points below
- Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 156 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
- Payload. The electric version carries 149kg less (1,156kg against 1,305kg).
- Towing. Braked towing: 2,300kg electric, 2,800kg diesel.
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 9p a mile against 22.4p for diesel: roughly £3,350 a year less at 25,000 miles.
- Price. The electric version lists for £1,240 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 0.4 years.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Loads that use the last 149kg of the diesel's payload.
- Towing more than 2,300kg.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 223-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.314 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Volkswagen Transporter T32 Panel Van Commerce LWB 150PS 2.0 TDI 8-Speed Automatic's official 33.6mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
