Be.EV warns rising EV costs could slow adoption as it launches what it calls UK's first charging subscription pass

Be.EV has warned, in comments reported by Chronicle Live, that the cumulative cost of government policies could put people off switching from petrol and diesel cars to electric vehicles just as the transition is starting to gather pace, according to a company spokesperson. To help drivers handle rising costs, the charging network has launched what it describes as the UK's first monthly EV charging pass.

The offer comes in two tiers: a Go Pass at £49 a month for a 120kWh allowance, enough for around 400 miles, and a Go Further Pass at £89 a month for a 250kWh allowance, sufficient for roughly 800 miles. Rather than tracking peak and off-peak rates, drivers on either pass get a set monthly energy allowance.

Be.EV's comments follow a cost increase for EV drivers in April 2025, when electric vehicles became liable for vehicle excise duty, widely known as road tax.

Be.EV also said the cost of bringing grid power to a charging site has, in a couple of cases, been high enough to make otherwise promising locations commercially unviable. The company said this is particularly challenging in rural and remote communities, though it can happen in towns and cities too, a factor covered in THRIVE's look at EV charging for fleets.
