Cargo bike convoy to press London Mayor for Dutch-style zero-emission freight zone
More than 50 cargo bikes will ride through central London on 30 September as campaigners point to TfL data showing cargo bike use has more than doubled since 2022, alongside diesel van registrations in the capital topping 100,000 for the first time.
More than 50 cargo bikes are taking part in a convoy through central London on Wednesday 30 September 2026, organised by Team London Bridge, Clean Cities and MP Smarter Travel, to showcase cargo bike freight and press the Mayor of London for action on diesel vans, Van Fleet World reports.
Transport for London data shows cargo bike use in London has risen 126% since 2022, and 149% in inner London. Against that, the number of diesel vans registered by businesses in London has also risen, breaking the 100,000 mark for the first time.
Analysis by Clean Cities found that diesel vans are now the biggest road source of NOx emissions in central and inner London.
The convoy follows a letter to the Mayor of London from environmental and health campaigners, including Prof Sir Stephen Holgate, Special Advisor to the Royal College of Physicians on Air Quality, and Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah CBE, founder of the Ella Roberta Foundation, calling for a Dutch-style zero-emission zone for freight to support the switch to zero-emission fleets such as cargo bikes and electric vans. Business Improvement Districts have also written to the Mayor to call for action.
