Digital fleet cards match plastic on controls, not just speed

Motive's mobile card can be loaded straight into Apple, Google or Samsung wallets and issued to a driver's phone the moment they need it, rather than waiting on a physical card to be produced and posted out (Motive). For a fleet onboarding a new driver mid-week, or replacing a lost card on a Friday, that lag has always been the annoying bit.
It isn't a looser version of the plastic product either. The digital card carries the same controls: spend limits, merchant category restrictions, transaction caps and expiry dates, plus two-factor authentication and manager-triggered deactivation if activity looks off (Motive). Cascade Environmental's Alex Amort credits running fleet and expenses through one dashboard with tighter operational control, catching fraud before it lands, and coaching drivers on fuelling habits - which he says has produced documented savings rather than vague efficiency gains (Motive). It can sit alongside a physical card or replace it outright, so there's no forced migration.
Why this matters: for UK fleets juggling AFR compliance and driver spend policy, real-time visibility and auto-deactivation matter more than the novelty of tap-to-pay. Worth asking any card provider whether their digital offer matches plastic on controls, not just convenience.
