Two-way driver and dispatch calling: what it changes for fleets

Motive has built live two-way calling straight into its AI Dashcam Plus, letting managers ring a driver from the Motive Dashboard or Fleet App with audio routed through the dash cam's speaker and dual microphones - no phone in hand required. For UK operators wrestling with hands-free rules and driver distraction policy, that's the headline: a call channel that doesn't need a handset in the cab at all (Motive).

The feature sits inside Motive's wider Integrated Operations Platform, which already covers driver safety, equipment monitoring, spend and workforce management, so calls aren't a bolted-on gimmick - dispatchers can pull up GPS position, recent safety events, engine health and trip history mid-call, and the conversation logs automatically alongside that compliance data. Motive's own example is a storm rerouting call, with dispatch giving a driver an updated route and safe stop options in real time. Fault codes and safety events can also trigger an immediate call-back, and Motive is adding "Hey Atlas" voice commands so drivers can initiate calls without touching a screen (Motive).

Why this matters: for fleets already running Motive hardware, this closes a gap between telematics alerts and driver contact that previously meant a separate phone call outside the system. Anyone evaluating in-cab communication should check whether keeping calls inside the safety and compliance record, rather than on a personal mobile, changes how incidents get audited and how quickly hazards get escalated.
