Fastned has opened a new 12-bay electric vehicle charging hub next to the OK Diner restaurant on the A1 northbound at Cromwell, near Newark, expanding its UK charging network along the route, the Newark Advertiser reported.

The site's launch was celebrated in 1950s style, in keeping with the diner's themed branding. From 5 October, the first 50 customers to charge received a £10 Fastned voucher, redeemable via the Fastned app and valid until 18 October.

Fastned says the bays are powered by renewable energy and offer up to 400 kW of charging power, capable of adding as much as 200 miles of range in ten minutes.

Tom Hurst, Fastned UK's country director, said: "The A1 is a vital corridor connecting the south to the north for families, road trippers, and fleets, making top-tier ultra-rapid charging along this route a major priority for us."

Dafydd Poole, owner of OK Diners, said: "The classic roadside diner is always at the heart of any great road trip, and welcoming Fastned to OK Diner Newark brings that tradition into the electric age." Guests to the restaurant on the opening day had 25% off their bill for up to four people.

Shane Brennan, chief executive of ChargeUK, said: "Fastned's new Newark site is yet more evidence of the continued investment the charging sector is putting into providing drivers with widespread high-quality charging." ChargeUK has previously examined how well the UK's plug-in hybrid fleet can use ultra-rapid charging.
