Sandall-Mansergh disappointed on Government’s move to increase BIK
Caroline Sandall-Mansergh, Consultancy and Channel Development Manager at Alphabet (GB), says the Budget's 1% rise in Benefit-in-Kind for fully electric company cars from 2030/31 is unwelcome, after the fleet and leasing industry had asked for the rate to be frozen at 9% through to 2031/32. She adds that eVED, due from April 2028, brings further uncertainty, and that fleets need a clear direction to plan the switch to electric. The press release is published below as supplied.

28 October 2026, Farnborough, UK: Caroline Sandall-Mansergh, Consultancy and Channel Development Manager at Alphabet (GB), has expressed her disappointment on the lack of long-term certainty regarding company car tax.
Speaking after John Healey’s first Budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer today, Sandall-Mansergh said: “The fleet and leasing industry has long-urged the Government to provide greater certainty for drivers by freezing Benefit-in-Kind rates at 9% for all fully electric vehicles (EVs) through to the 2031/32 tax year.
“While the 1% increase from 2030/31 may at first appear modest, it’s unwelcome and risks creating yet another barrier for drivers who are considering switching to an EV. It comes at a time when the Government is looking to accelerate the transition to greener transport, so this incremental rise sends the wrong message to drivers and businesses alike.
“There’s also the added complexity of the eVED set to be introduced from April 2028, which creates further uncertainty surrounding the Government’s long-term approach to fleet electrification. We speak with fleet operators and drivers on a daily basis; they need confidence and certainty to plan effectively. A clear direction of travel is essential if the UK is to meet its zero emissions mandate by 2035,” she added.
The Government’s announcement will now see the Benefit-in-Kind rate for EVs increase from 5% to 10% over the next three tax years.
