The number of broker-supplied leasing vehicles rose 13% year-on-year to 345,240, according to the latest BVRLA Leasing Broker Outlook research, as reported by Fleet News.

However, industry leaders suggest the true size of the fleet could be 200,000 to 250,000 vehicles bigger, because large funders and brokers did not submit data for the latest report.

Vans lead the growth

The leasing van fleet was up 16% year-on-year to 82,454 vehicles. Finance lease made the biggest gain, up 60% year-on-year on the broker van fleet, while business contract hire (BCH) vans rose a more modest 2%. Even so, BCH still accounts for twice as many vans on the BVRLA broker fleet as finance leasing, at 53,495 compared with 24,925.

The BVRLA said demand for electric vans is only nudging up slowly despite heavy discounting, even as the zero emission vehicle mandate ratchets up the percentage of electric vans manufacturers must sell.

Maintenance penetration of new BCH and personal contract hire (PCH) agreements has declined over the past year, which the BVRLA attributes to customers opting for the cheapest monthly rentals.

The findings follow BVRLA's recent report that the wider UK leasing fleet hit a record 2.14 million vehicles, as car demand surged while van numbers stagnated.
