THRIVE verdict

Strong range and fast charging, but payload and load space are tight for a crew van at this price.

This is a crew version of the E-Transit Custom, built to carry a team plus tools rather than maximise payload. At 916kg it sits in the lowest quarter for payload among medium vans, and its 3.3m³ load volume is also in the lowest quarter. That's the trade-off of the double cab layout: useful for crews, but not for bulky or heavy loads.

Where it does well is range and charging. 226 miles WLTP puts it in the top quarter of electric medium vans, backed by a 71kWh battery in the top 10% for size and 125kW peak DC charging also in the top 10%, enough for 69 miles in ten minutes. That suits operators who need to cover real distance and top up quickly between jobs rather than always charging overnight.

Against the diesel equivalent, this electric version costs £1,980 more after the Zero Emission Van Grant, and whether that's worth it depends on mileage and where it charges: cheaper per mile on depot or home charging, more expensive on public rapid chargers. Against rivals, the Citroën ë-Dispatch Crew Van carries more (1,075kg) for less range, and the Volkswagen e-Transporter is cheaper but carries less (884kg); this Ford sits at the median for towing at 2,250kg.

Best for

  • crews needing passenger space and genuine daily range
  • operations with access to rapid DC charging for quick turnarounds
  • depot or home-charged fleets where per-mile running costs favour electric

Think twice

  • payload is in the lowest quarter for the class at 916kg
  • load volume of 3.3m³ is also in the lowest quarter
  • list price sits in the highest quarter, with only a modest premium over the diesel after the grant

Electric or diesel?

How the Ford E-Transit Custom Trend 320 SWB Low Roof Double Cab-In-Van (L1 H1), 71kWh 100kW / 136PS RWD compares with Ford Transit Custom Trend 320 SWB Low Roof Double Cab-In-Van (L1 H1), 2.0L EcoBlue 110PS 6 Speed Manual FWD, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.

Overnight charging

Electric could work: check the points below

  • Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 158 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
  • Payload. The electric version carries 308kg less (916kg against 1,224kg).
  • Towing. Braked towing: 2,250kg electric, 2,000kg diesel.
  • Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 9p a mile against 19.7p for diesel: roughly £2,675 a year less at 25,000 miles.
  • Price. The electric version lists for £1,980 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 0.7 years.

When the diesel is the more practical choice

  • Loads that use the last 308kg of the diesel's payload.
How this is worked out
  • Planning range is 70% of the official 226-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
  • Energy use 0.314 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
  • Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Ford Transit Custom Trend 320 SWB Low Roof Double Cab-In-Van (L1 H1), 2.0L EcoBlue 110PS 6 Speed Manual FWD's official 38.2mpg.
  • Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
  • 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
