THRIVE verdict
Strong range and fast charging for an electric medium van, but payload and price are real compromises.
This E-Transit Custom stands out on range and charging. Its 230-mile WLTP figure and 71kWh usable battery both sit in the top 10% of electric medium vans, and 125kW peak DC charging gets it from 10-80% in 29 minutes. For fleets covering long daily routes and able to charge at a depot or at home, that combination reduces range anxiety and downtime more than most electric rivals in this class.
The trade-off is payload: at 1,046kg it falls in the lowest quarter of medium vans, well below the class median of 1,173kg, and below both its own diesel sibling (1,354kg) and plug-in hybrid sibling (1,206kg). Load volume is average for the class at 5.8m³, and towing at 2,300kg is above median, so it's no weaker there. List price, at £43,630, is in the top quarter of the class.
Against other electric medium vans it's competitive: the Volkswagen e-Transporter offers a touch more payload at 1,076kg for a lower price, while the Toyota Proace undercuts on price but trails on both payload and range. After the £5,000 grant, this van lists £2,680 more than its own diesel sibling and £1,720 less than its own plug-in hybrid sibling; whether that gap pays back depends on mileage and whether charging happens mostly at depot or on public rapid chargers.
Best for
- Long daily routes needing range confidence
- Fleets that can charge at depot or home overnight
- Jobs needing above-average towing capacity
Think twice
- Payload-sensitive loads: check against the 1,046kg figure
- Higher list price than most medium vans
- Battery warranty terms not stated in the price list

Electric or diesel?
How the Ford E-Transit Custom Trend 320 L1H1 SWB Low Roof Van, 71kWh 100kW/136PS RWD compares with Ford Transit Custom Trend 320 SWB Low Roof Van (L1 H1), 2.0L EcoBlue 110PS 6 Speed Manual FWD, the same body with the other powertrain, for a typical working day.
Electric could work: check the points below
- Range. 100 miles a day sits comfortably inside a planning range of about 161 miles, so an overnight charge covers the day.
- Payload. The electric version carries 308kg less (1,046kg against 1,354kg).
- Towing. Braked towing: 2,300kg electric, 2,000kg diesel.
- Energy. Charging at a small-business depot costs about 8.8p a mile against 19.2p for diesel: roughly £2,600 a year less at 25,000 miles.
- Price. The electric version lists for £2,680 more after the £5,000 zero emission van and truck grant, which the energy saving covers in about 1 years.
When the diesel is the more practical choice
- Loads that use the last 308kg of the diesel's payload.
How this is worked out
- Planning range is 70% of the official 230-mile WLTP figure, allowing for winter weather and a full load.
- Energy use 0.309 kWh a mile: the usable battery divided by the official range.
- Diesel 165.48p a litre excluding VAT (DESNZ, week of 2 November 2026); the Ford Transit Custom Trend 320 SWB Low Roof Van (L1 H1), 2.0L EcoBlue 110PS 6 Speed Manual FWD's official 39.2mpg.
- Electricity: 28.59p/kWh at a small-business depot (DESNZ, excluding VAT), 26.32p at home as the driver pays (Ofgem price cap), 65.83p on public rapid chargers (Zapmap, excluding VAT).
- 250 working days a year. List prices exclude VAT and options; running costs exclude servicing, insurance, tax and residual values.
